I have always wanted to create an edible garden. I have memories of my mom having a large garden when we lived in the country. Although, in hindsight, I am sure that the garden was not very bountiful and I am sure my mom hated doing it. She is an amazing gardener but has no love for vegetable gardening.
We have been living in our house for 5 years and my husband has finally (reluctantly) agreed to let me tear up the back 8 ft and create a garden. Yeah!
I knew I wanted to do a couple of raised bed gardens and I found a kit at Lee Valley Tools. http://www.leevalley.com/en/garden/page.aspx?p=10351&cat=2 I ordered the corners and then went to find the wood. I thought it would be simple but apparently 1"X8" boards are very uncommon. My sister finally located them at a specialty cedar company in Waterloo. So I built the raised beds. My kids even helped. It was very simple to do. I now have 2 beds that are 8'x 4'.
I also created 2 8'x8' in-ground gardens on either side of the raised beds. One will be an herb garden and the other will hold perennial vegetables (asparagus), fruit (rhubarb, berries, apple tree) and vine plants (pumpkin, watermelon, cucumber).
On to the planning...
